Sanghara’s practice spans photography, film, writing, installation, cultural programming and community-led engagement. Her work engages with forms of refusal that often occur in the in-between spaces of physical and digital production. She is particularly interested in the self-coined term ‘glitched-mixed-body’ as a practice of bringing forward anti-colonial perspectives on the (mis)imaging of mixed bodies throughout history. Rooted in narratives of fugitivity, forbidden love, and intimacy, her work explores the process of ‘brownness and whiteness becoming Britishness’. All of this converges as a site to refigure the relationships between the ‘elsewhere’ and the ‘homeland’, the ‘legible’ and the ‘illegible’. Sanghara has worked across museums and galleries including Arnolfini, Hauser &amp; Wirth, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, and Central Saint Martins, advocating for arts spaces as vital platforms for unlearning and relearning - centring practices conventionally marginalised within these worlds.She also co-founded the community collective ‘No Man’s Land’, which upholds global majority artist-led programming and curation through the celebration of mixed histories. photographs. Working through the lens of personal experience as a brown-white woman living in the diaspora, Sanghara exposes through images unseen narratives of love: interracial love, forbidden love, exiled love, grieving love. A love that sits between fiction and reality. Myth and ancestry. Nationalism and longing. Britain and other. The images together serve to tell the artist’s story of England, as one of complication, loss, insurmountability and celebration. “My identification as either white or brown will always be inauthentic. Passing for white is not a desire or strategy, but an assumed self-presence that lingers, an image that’s hard to shake. So, when making work about “brownness” - my brown histories and lineage - I fear I will be found out as a fraud, a cultural impostor, bearing the mark of mixed-race epidermal privilege that could - if I let it – wrongly place me as a knowing interface between India and Britain. My practice challenges this, advocating the other part of myself that is unseen, politicising identity as not a visually distinguishable authorisation. Stripped, my work is rooted in a story of love. Interracial love. Forbidden love. Endorsing uneasy proximities to my “brown side” as a way to deal with the trauma of my mother’s exile – which has become my exile – all because she chose to run away with an English man. This dangerous cross-pollination of brown and white is embodied in me, the perfect metaphor for questioning power relations that pervade the art world, a space where work still needs to be done so The English folk tale ‘The House that Jack Built’ is reimagined, dismantled and rebuilt to complicate the imaging and codification of mixed identities throughout history. New possibilities for seeing and understanding are opened to question how bodies can be remixed, speech dissolved, and precarious structures reclaimed for restoration and repair as the artists form representative rifts, inserting postcolonial stories into nationalistic ones. Through a plethora of portable relics, artefacts and both ‘functioning’ and ‘function-less’ objects, the exhibition forms ‘Jack’s House’ filled with an inventory of memorabilia and collectibles of tangible and intangible narratives that create a dialogue for contemporary British life. Working through traditional markers of material culture and the domestic, the exhibition confronts modes of ‘Ornamentalism’ and assumed definitions of “exhibition”, “curator”, “artist”, “audience”, “community” and “home”, reconfiguring the space through a variety of mediums. ‘This is the House that Jack Built’ is a vivid retelling of those stories, myths, legacies and folklores from the official voice that fail and exclude the diverse voices that make up Britain today. Storytelling here is self-defence, is disorder, is radical disobedience. If Britain is the House and Jack its proprietor, we must ask how we can tear down and mend its walls, restructuring the frameworks of institutions that keep us below the threshold of being heard. Shown as part of ‘This is the House that Jack Built’.(APT Gallery, London) When is it time to dream of another country? is an arrangement of myth-building. Evolving a cartography of love and loss that draws lines between England and India, North and South, Sanghara uses mapping like the joining up of a fresco, starting from her father’s childhood estate and ending at her mother’s. Tracing ancestral memory through the language of found materials sourced from both parent’s birthplaces, these become migratory talismans, contact zones of shifting vectors, opening out old and new brown/white British geographies of space, land, person and (un)protection. The radios are tuned just off finding global station frequency, the bus seat moquette is re-stitched just off its pattern flow, the screen blocks coax unbalance. As a series of refusals these materials are failing communication, rejecting alignment, stuck in transit, all “under construction”. Two channel HD digital video projection, 15 minutes 29 seconds, colour, sound, looped, installed with mayian ingredients for whiteness. Nominated for the Ingram Prize 2022. Documenting a generation of British-Indians still trying to locate themselves joining England’s “nation face”, intimacies between Punjabi and white working-class culture in Britain are imagined. Rituals only ever performed in the homeland are re-performed in a stereotypical Anglo-Indian home in Birmingham. Deliberately “low budget” the not knowing, the opacity, the untranslatability of living on the threshold of a culture that has always been just out of reach is captured. The cinematic conversation is opened to include the nuances of brown and white passing experience in a mixed-race (Great) Britannia. As a recreation of the “revealing of the bride’s fairness” part of Mayian, the work functions as the final scene, interrogating the fetishism of relocating ritual in a Western institutional space. The issues of cultural (mis)translation, mimicry and retrieval are explored as traumatic symptoms of the diaspora, whilst the ontology of the digitised South Asian body is renegotiated on a disused CCTV surveillance monitor. Different versions of Punjabi to English translations held over-the-phone capture how colonial violence is imposed on individuals refusing to take on a new language. The work thus strategically refuses these attempted translations, shifting semantics in each iteration. The viewer entering at different points in its screening is left uncertain which translation, if any, to trust. The license to watch, use and take from others is questioned.
